Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust

Description

Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is one of the largest and oldest chimpanzee sanctuaries of the world, currently with 130 rescued chimps.

Chimfunshi also works to protect the Zambian local wildlife, including rescue, rehabilitate and release. The newly built veterinary hospital enhances this work.

The community work includes the Twampane Community School and a Community Health Clinic.

Impact

Although chimpanzees are not indigenous in Zambia, they are in neighboring countries. This threatened species is traded globally and Chimfunshi has provided a sanctuary for rescued individuals.

The essential new veterinary centre was completed with an EC funded solar system and a microscope providing increased care for the chimpanzees living here.

The community that shares the area with the sanctuary have also received clean water and ongoing conservation education from the supported education officer.
